Incident happened at Delhi Airport On Friday, Delhi-NCR experienced a deluge of rain that caused serious disruptions to daily activities. As a result, flight operations at Delhi airport’s Terminal 1 were temporarily suspended due to a partial roof collapse that claimed one life.
A heavy downpour hit Delhi early in the morning, with 150 mm of rain falling in just three hours, from 2:30 am to 5:30 am. With 228 mm of rain falling in the previous 24 hours, the Safdarjung observatory reports that this is one of the worst rainfall events the capital has had this year.
The intense downpour caused extensive flooding around the city, submerging numerous sections and allowing water to penetrate into houses in a number of low-lying neighborhoods. Due to flooded roadways, this has had a major impact on traffic flow and left many commuters stranded.

All flight departures from Terminal 1 have been suspended due to flooding, and the check-in counters are still closed. Twelve flights arriving and sixteen departing have been canceled since midnight due to the inconvenience.
Many areas of the city, including Teen Murti Marg, Moolchand, Minto Road, Anand Vihar, and Mehrauli Badarpur Road, were reported to have significant waterlogging. Residents of South East Delhi’s Chittaranjan Park saw damage to furniture and other household goods as a result of the flooding, which also reached into residential areas.
Numerous diversions have been put in place by the traffic police along important thoroughfares, including the Delhi-Meeraunit Highway and the Naraina-Moti Bagh road close to the Dhaula Kuan Flyover. Because of the water, authorities are recommending commuters to look for alternate routes.
The newly elected minister of civil aviation, Mr. Kinjarapu, stated in a statement that the planes slated to take off after 2:00 pm will operate out of the airport’s other two terminals, Terminals 2 and 3.
“I personally visited the spot after the T1 terminal in Delhi collapsed this morning. The safe departure of every traveler from the terminal was our first priority. As a result, all flights booked through 2:00 PM have been canceled. Full refunds will be given to passengers, or they can choose to rebook on different flights and routes. According to him, flights leaving after 2:00 PM will be run out of T2 and T3.
“I will see that a thorough examination of the terminal’s structure is conducted by experts to ensure safety,” he said.
Furthermore, he stated that we have the full support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is “closely monitoring” the situation.
After examining the Delhi airport, he addressed media, describing the tragedy as “very serious” and announcing compensation of ₹ 3 lakh for each injured person and ₹ 20 lakh for the victim’s family.
Additonally, The Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25 Metro station’s entry and exit gates were closed as a result of the severe rains, which also had an influence on Delhi Metro services. To make matters worse for both locals and visitors, the shuttle service between Delhi Aerocity Metro station and Terminal 1-IGI Airport has been discontinued.
